Roadway reconstruction begins Tuesday (May 31) on West Lanikaula Street in Hilo as part of the $13.6 million Kapiolani Street extension project. The work requires a one-way, one-lane traffic pattern in the mauka direction between Ululani and Nowelo streets.
Working hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no work on weekends or holidays, and full two-way traffic patterns will be restored at the end of each workday. Contractor Isemoto Contracting Co. plans to complete work by June 15, weather and construction conditions permitting.
The following traffic patterns will be in effect during working hours for the project:
• No through traffic for makai bound on Kumukoa Street. Motorists will be detoured onto Kalili Street.
• No left turn from Kalili Street onto West Lanikaula.
• The approach from Kapiolani onto West Lanikaula will be closed to through traffic.
• No left turn onto Kapiolani from West Lanikaula.
Special-duty police officers will be posted in the work area to direct traffic. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes.
